World première of Τάρταρος – Symphonie électro-visuelle for digitally processed sounds and video (2009-2012) took place on 9 and 10 June 2012 at the Ledcor Theatre, Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton, AB. The four-movement work was commissioned for the Good Women Dance Collective with financial support provided by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
From the review by Jerry A. Ozipko (Panorama, Vol. 20, No. 7 (225), July 2012, Edmonton, AB):
“As a singular work, it is almost impossible to characterise by its genre. Classified as a unique electro-visual symphony by its creator, the composition is truly multi-disciplinary, featuring a stunning electro-acoustic soundtrack, accompanied by spectacular video projections and, further, turned into a choreographed narrative by a pair of female dancers …
[The work was] presented jointly by members of the Good Women Dance Collective and the composer … Ainsley Hillyard and Raena Waddell, cited in the programme as Performers/Interpreters, presented compelling and … evocative contemporary dance. Alida Nyquist-Schultz provided the stunning choreography …
The artistic and emotional impact of this work on the audience was profound. At the conclusion, the applause was spontaneous and instantaneous and hardly anyone wanted to leave the hall afterwards. Alas! for the fact that there were only two performances of this masterpiece, for a multi-disciplinary masterpiece it truly is, and it should be seen and heard across this vast nation if not on the international stage!”
