Another performance of …a Portmanteau of Shaddowes and Chimeras… (coloratura after Peter Ackroyd) for flute solo (2005) by the outstanding Polish-Greek virtuosa Iwona Glinka takes place on 4 November 2014 in Sopot, Poland.
…a Portmanteau of Shaddowes and Chimeras… (coloratura after Peter Ackroyd) for (amplified) flute solo (2005) was composed as a “link” in a larger cycle of similar (“twin”) works for various solo instruments. The main idea behind this music was to write a challenging, virtuoso study of varied textures obtained through the use of the extended playing techniques such as fairly unorthodox production of sound, multiphonics, double-stops, voice-instrument double stops, expressive articulation, excessive ornamentation (hence the title!), circular breathing, etc. Furthermore, the nature of the flute has been changed by virtue of ‘notorious’ variety, employment of “metaserial” rhythmic and pitch-class operations, and manipulation with different kinds of attacks and dynamic levels. The flute becomes a “persona” expressing itself through a specific “internal monologue”. The work was written especially for and is dedicated to the Polish-Greek flautist Iwona Glinka.
