Canadian première of Stolte for computer soundtrack, live electronics and alto saxophone (2010) was given by its dedicatee, Charles Stolte, saxophone, and Piotr Grella-Możejko, computer, on 9 February 2013, as part of the Biennial Conference of the North American Saxophone Alliance, Region 9. The performance took place at the University of Saskatoon in Saskatoon, SK.
Written expressly for Charles Stolte on a grant from the Edmonton Arts Council, Stolte is a piece whose innate virtuosity remains at the service of highly expressive lyricism. Named after the dedicatee and part of the saxophone/electronics tetralogy, in which each piece is named after a saxophone virtuoso addressee (the other three being Allison Balcetis, Julia Nolan, and John Sampen), the work makes use of such techniques as circular breathing, alternative (enharmonic) fingering, and the like. As is always the case in my music, it is the emotional intensity of the narrative, which constitutes the most essential aspect of the piece.
